Topicalization and Truth Conditions: A Categorial Grammar Account∗

چکیده

In this paper we will consider how the choice between the topic marker wa and nominative marker for subjects affects truth conditions of sentences. We derive the proper interpretations for sentences with topics and nominative subjects in terms of syntaxsemantics interface. The categorial framework adopted here allows us to account for significant difference in meaning with respect to the choice of markers for subjects while maintaining the principle of strong compositionality.

A Lexical-Functional Analysis of Predicate Topicalization in German

In this paper we examine the topicalization paradigm for ten different verbal constructions in German. We argue that a uniform explanation for the observed behaviors follows from the interpretation of the relevant expressions as (parts of) lexical representations. To this end we motivate a revision of Functional Uncertainty as proposed in Kaplan and Zaenen (1989) to account for filler/gap relat...

Applicative Abstract Categorial Grammars

We present the grammar/semantic formalism of Applicative Abstract Categorial Grammars (AACG), based on the recent techniques from functional programming: applicative functors, staged languages and typed final language embeddings. AACG is a generalization of Abstract Categorial Grammars (ACG), retaining the benefits of ACG as a grammar formalism and making it possible and convenient to express a...

Applicative Abstract Categorial Grammars in Full Swing

Recently introduced Applicative Abstract Categorial Grammars (AACG) extend the Abstract Categorial Grammar (ACG) formalism to make it more suitable for semantic analyses while preserving all of its benefits for syntactic analyses. The surface form of a sentence, the abstract (tecto-) form, as well as the meaning are all uniformly represented in AACG as typed terms, or trees. The meaning of a se...

A Pilot Arabic CCGbank

We describe a process for converting the Penn Arabic Treebank into the CCG formalism. Previous efforts have yielded CCGbanks in English, German, and Turkish, thus opening these languages to the sophisticated computational tools developed for CCG and enabling further cross-linguistic development. Conversion from a context free grammar treebank to a CCGbank is a four stage process: head finding, ...

The Categorial Annotation of Coordination in Arabic

The model of categorial grammars is a sufficiently flexible model to give an account of several languages and several forms of organisation of the linguistic units of these languages (coordination, subordination, etc). However, the research tasks were limited almost exclusively to European languages. A language like Arabic, in spite of the richness of the tradition of its schools of thought, wh...
